  37. I.  Metrosoft announces MetroTracks,  pro audio software for NeXT 
  38.  
  39. San Diego, CA, June 15, 1992 - Metrosoft announced today that it is
  40. developing MetroTracks, the first commercial multitrack audio
  41. software for NeXT workstations, running NeXTSTEP 3.0.
  42.  
  43. A NeXT workstation equipped with MetroTracks and any of several
  44. analog or digital audio front ends provides users with a
  45. full-featured digital audio workstation capable of recording, mixing
  46. and editing CD-quality sound plus MIDI data.  A MetroTracks recording
  47. can contain up to 32 virtual tracks in any combination of audio and
  48. MIDI and as many as 8 tracks can be mixed simultaneously, depending
  49. on the user's hardware configuration. While MetroTracks takes full
  50. advantage of the current NeXT hardware, its architecture is
  51. expandable to utilize any future NeXT hardware directions.
  52.  
  53. "MetroTracks provides users with a seamless integration of MIDI and
  54. recorded audio," said Gordon Van Huizen, President of Metrosoft.
  55. "In addition, a complete system built around a NeXT computer and 
  56. MetroTracks costs users considerably less than alternatives on 
  57. other platforms, yet contains remarkable sophistication and polish."

  59. MetroTracks is scalable, yielding increasing real-time control as
  60. users add processing horsepower.  MetroTracks includes digital
  61. effects which can be applied to recorded tracks including digital
  62. delay, reverb, chorusing, pitch shift, and amplitude
  63. compression/expansion.

  65. MetroTracks can output to DAT recorders and conventional audio
  66. devices, and is compatible with many of the leading NeXT third party
  67. audio hardware products, including Singular Solutions' A/D64x
  68. interface, Ariel Corporation's Digital Microphone and ProPort
  69. products, Quest  Inc.'s Midi Link converters,  and Metaresearch
  70. Inc's. Digital Ears.

  72. "An entry-level NeXT system, out of the box, provides users with a
  73. rich set of built-in digital and audio capabilities," said Robert
  74. Poor, Developer Advocate, NeXT Computer.  "MetroTracks promises to
  75. complete that solution, turning a NeXT system into an integrated
  76. digital/audio workstation, and at a fraction of the cost of other
  77. platforms."

  79. MetroTracks is in alpha testing now and will be in beta by the end of
  80. July.  The product is expected to ship in September and retail for
  81. $XXX with educational, developer and quantity discounts available.

  147. III. NeXTSTEP Release 3.0 Fact Sheet
  148.  
  149.  
  150. Product Overview:
  151.  
  152. NeXTSTEP Release 3.0 is a new generation of NeXTSTEP object-oriented
  153. system software.  NeXTSTEP, the only object-oriented system software
  154. currently shipping, greatly speeds the development of
  155. mission-critical custom applications up to five times faster than
  156. with competing environments.  In addition, the NeXTSTEP graphical
  157. user interface lets mere mortal users take advantage of the powerful
  158. custom and shrink-wrapped applications written for the platform.

  160. Among the most significant enhancements of NeXTSTEP Release 3.0 are
  161. additional software objects that commercial and in-house developers
  162. can use to create their applications.  Release 3.0 bundles three
  163. major new object kits, and third-party developers already market more
  164. than 100 additional objects aimed at a wide range of specialized
  165. tasks.  Because NeXTSTEP is completely object-oriented, all these new
  166. objects fit seamlessly into the development environment, making the
  167. real promises of object-oriented computing available for the first

  269. IV.  NeXT Support Center Recent mailing
  270.  
  271. The following message was recently delivered to all authorized
  272. NeXT Support Centers...

  274. Dear NeXT Authorized Support Center,
  275.  
  276. In a continued commitment to leading edge technology and streamlined
  277. manufacturing, NeXT has updated the CPU board used in the 25 MHz 
  278. NeXTstation. All 25 MHz NeXTstations (part number N1100-1768) are 
  279. now built around the new board which uses the same memory sub-system as NeXT
  280. Turbo systems. The board features the TMC (turbo memory controller) 
  281. and PC (peripheral controller) chips which control all memory and 
  282. I/O, including display.
  283.  
  284. Standardizing on only one base monochrome CPU board provides NeXT
  285. far better manufacturing economies. The new board also results in 
  286. slightly higher system performance and allows a maximum possible 
  287. memory capacity of 128 MB vs. the old board's 32 MB limit.

  290. A Different Type of SIMM
  291.  
  292. The new 25 MHz NeXTstation board requires different SIMMs than the 
  293. old version.  Like the NeXT Turbo systems, the 25 MHz NeXTstation's 
  294. CPU board includes four memory sockets which require 72 pin, 70 
  295. nanosecond SIMMs.  Both single and double-sided SIMMs are compatible.
  296.  
  297. This memory architecture also makes it possible to upgrade all new 
  298. NeXTstations and all NeXTstation Turbos, NeXTstation Turbo Colors, 
  299. and NeXTcube Turbos in two-SIMM increments. The 8MB and 16MB versions 
  300. ship with two open SIMM sockets for easy expansion.

  302. Identifying the Computer's SIMM Type
  303.  
  304. NeXT began shipping the new 25 MHz NeXTstation CPU board in late 
  305. June. All system serial numbers higher than ABB0028000 include the 
  306. new boards. A few systems shipped in late June with lower serial 
  307. numbers also include the  new boards.
  308.  
  309. To verify which SIMM type a machine uses, check the system's memory
  310. configuration. This can be accomplished by using the ROM monitor's 
  311. print memory configuration command m.
  312.  
  313.    - Start with the machine powered down.
  314.    - Press the Power key to power on.
  315.    - As soon as the message *Testing system...: disappears, press
  316.          command-command-tilde (~ on the numeric keyboard). Under 
  317.          these circumstances, this will access the ROM monitor. 
  318.    - In the ROM monitor, type m and press Return.
  319.    
  320. Turbo-designed boards including new 25 MHz NeXTstations and all 
  321. Turbo systems return messages reporting memory configuration 
  322. contained in four sockets (sockets 0 -3); old 25 MHz boards return 
  323. messages for more than four sockets. A Turbo-designed board is 
  324. identified by the fact it reports information for only four sockets.

  429. The School of Communications at American University is looking for
  430. a Manager for their new Newsroom.  The Newsroom is composed of 45
  431. Turbo NeXTstations that will be primarily using Wordperfect,
  432. Framemaker, Improv and (probably) Livewire.  The Lab will be internet
  433. connected and running off of a NeXTcube 32meg / 2+ gig server.

  436. well as training faculty/staff/students in the use of the lab.

  488. We have added significantly more functionality to the macro execution
  489. engine thanks to a number of wk1 files sent to us.

  491. The charting has been expanded through the addition of the XY chart
  492. type, a better graph inspector, multiple data ranges, additional
  493. titles that can appear on the charts, legends, etc. (Thanks in large
  494. part to Paul Howell for suggestions on the graphs.)

  496. You can also print reports from custom apps.  What this means is the
  497. Mesa can now be the charting engine for a custom app (just pump the
  498. data in and grab a chart out) or a report engine (build the report
  499. using Mesa's visual report builder, pump data in, and print the
  500. report.)

  504. Society meeting (MIT Room 6-120 at 7pm.)  For those who will be in
